What Is a Workout Split?

A workout split is the organizational structure that determines which muscle groups or movement patterns you train on which days. It dictates training frequency per muscle group, session structure, recovery distribution, and exercise selection logic.

The fundamental purpose of any split is to manage the relationship between training stimulus (work performed) and recovery (adaptation between sessions). A good split provides enough frequency to maintain skill practice and protein synthesis elevation, enough volume per session to drive adaptation, and enough rest between sessions for the same muscle groups to recover.

The Research on Frequency

A landmark 2016 meta-analysis by Schoenfeld et al. found that training muscle groups twice per week produced significantly greater hypertrophy than once per week when volume was equated. However, frequencies beyond twice per week showed diminishing returns unless total volume was increased substantially.

Who Should Use PPL

Critical Caveat

The 6-day PPL pushed heavily on social media is inappropriate for most natural lifters. Recovery requirements exceed what many can provide with jobs, families, and sleep limitations. A 3-day PPL (Push, Pull, Legs with rest between) is more sustainable for most.
