Strength exists in context. A 150 lb athlete who squats 300 lb and a 250 lb athlete who squats 400 lb have achieved different feats relative to their bodyweight — but which is more impressive? The Wilks score answers this question by mathematically adjusting lifting totals for bodyweight, enabling fair comparison across weight classes.
Developed by Robert Wilks of Powerlifting Australia, the Wilks formula has been the standard coefficient system in powerlifting for decades. The updated Wilks 2 (2020) formula addresses biases in the original and remains widely used in competition and training contexts.

What Is the Wilks Score?
The Wilks score is a normalization coefficient that allows comparison of strength across different body weights. In powerlifting, where competitions are organized by weight class, the Wilks score answers a fundamental question: How strong is this lifter relative to their size?
The formula produces a coefficient that is multiplied by the lifter’s total (squat + bench press + deadlift). A higher Wilks score indicates better relative strength.
Why Not Just Use Lifting Multiples?
Some athletes compare strength using simple ratios (squat ÷ bodyweight). While intuitive, this approach has limitations:
- Not linear: Strength does not scale proportionally with bodyweight. A 132 lb lifter squatting 264 lb (2× BW) and a 308 lb lifter squatting 616 lb (2× BW) are not equivalent achievements. The heavier lifter’s feat is more difficult.
- Different body compositions: Two athletes at the same bodyweight may have very different lean body masses.
- Gender differences: Male and female strength curves differ significantly.
The Wilks formula accounts for these non-linear relationships through a polynomial equation fitted to actual competitive powerlifting data.
The Wilks Formula Explained
Wilks 2 (2020 Update)
The 2020 Wilks formula was developed to address known biases in the original formula, particularly at extreme bodyweights (very light and very heavy lifters). The International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) adopted this updated version for official competition.
The formula uses a 5th-degree polynomial:
Wilks Score = Lifted Total × (600 / (a + bx + cx² + dx³ + ex⁴ + fx⁵))
Where x is body weight in kilograms and a, b, c, d, e, f are sex-specific coefficients.

For most recreational lifters in the 140–220 lb range, the difference between original and Wilks 2 is minimal (typically under 5 points). The divergence becomes significant at bodyweights below 120 lb or above 275 lb.
What Wilks Scores Mean: Performance Classifications
Wilks scores fall into general classification bands used in powerlifting communities. These represent lifetime drug-free potential for most athletes with consistent training.

Using the Wilks Score in Training
Tracking Progress
The Wilks score provides a unified metric for tracking strength improvements that accounts for both lift increases and bodyweight changes.
Example:
- Month 1: 175 lb bodyweight, 850 lb total = 280 Wilks
- Month 6: 172 lb bodyweight, 920 lb total = 310 Wilks
Despite losing 3 lb (which could lower a raw total comparison), the Wilks score clearly shows meaningful strength improvement.
Goal Setting
Use the classification table above to set realistic goals:
- Beginner to Novice: Focus on technique and consistent training. Expect 20–30 Wilks point gains per year.
- Novice to Intermediate: Introduce periodization and structured programs. Expect 15–25 point gains per year.
- Intermediate to Advanced: Requires meticulous programming, recovery optimization, and potentially competition. Expect 10–15 point gains per year.
- Advanced to Elite: May take 3–5+ years. Small gains (5–10 points per year) represent significant achievement.
Comparing Lifts
The Wilks score also evaluates individual lifts:

Limitations of the Wilks Score
Despite its utility, the Wilks formula has known limitations that informed athletes should understand:
1. Not Validated for Non-Powerlifters
The Wilks formula was developed using competitive powerlifting data. It may not accurately represent strength for athletes who don’t train the competition lifts (squat, bench, deadlift) or who specialize in other disciplines.
2. Equipment Dependency
Wilks scores differ based on equipment used:
- Raw (no wraps): Most common for home gym athletes
- Raw with knee sleeves: Slight assistance (~5–15 lb on squat)
- Equipped (wraps/suits): Significantly higher totals, not comparable to raw scores
Always compare like with like — raw scores to raw scores, equipped to equipped.
3. Age Not Accounted For
A 25-year-old and a 55-year-old with identical Wilks scores have achieved different relative feats. The 55-year-old’s performance is more exceptional relative to age-group peers. Consider using age-adjusted comparisons for masters athletes.
4. Drug-Tested vs. Non-Tested
Wilks scores in drug-tested federations are not directly comparable to non-tested federations due to performance-enhancing drug use in the latter. Natural athletes should compare themselves to drug-tested standards.
5. Extreme Bodyweights
While Wilks 2 improved upon the original, very light (< 110 lb) and very heavy (> 350 lb) bodyweights may still show some formula artifacts. The DOTS formula (see below) may provide fairer comparisons at extremes.
Alternatives to Wilks
IPF Points (GL Points)
The International Powerlifting Federation replaced Wilks with the Goodlift Points (GL Points) system in 2019, then refined it further. IPF Points use a larger, more recent dataset and different polynomial fitting.
Key differences:
- Larger dataset (more recent competitions)
- Different mathematical model
- Produces different absolute scores (not comparable to Wilks directly)
- Official IPF standard for ranking
For IPF competitors, GL Points are the relevant metric. For general strength comparison, Wilks 2 remains more widely recognized.
DOTS Formula (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring)
Developed as an alternative to Wilks, the DOTS formula aims to reduce bodyweight bias further, particularly at the extremes.
When to use DOTS instead of Wilks:
- Very light lifters (< 120 lb bodyweight)
- Very heavy lifters (> 300 lb bodyweight)
- When comparing across the full competitive weight class range
- In team competitions where fairness across all weights matters
The DOTS formula produces scores roughly comparable in scale to Wilks but with different distribution characteristics. Some federations have adopted DOTS as their standard.
Strength-to-Weight Ratio (SWR)
The simplest comparison: total lifted ÷ bodyweight.
Best for: Quick mental math, same-weight-class comparisons, informal gym challenges.
Limitations: Does not account for the non-linear strength-bodyweight relationship; favors lighter lifters unfairly.
Allometric Scaling
A more theoretically grounded approach that scales strength by body mass raised to the 2/3 power (based on cross-sectional area scaling):
Allometric Score = Total / (Bodyweight^0.667)
Best for: Research contexts, biomechanical analysis.
Limitations: More complex; less intuitive than Wilks; not widely used in competition.

How Wilks Is Used in Meets
In powerlifting competitions, Wilks (or the federation’s chosen formula) serves several purposes:
- Best Lifter Awards: Determining the overall strongest lifter across all weight classes
- Team Scoring: Calculating team points in club/team competitions
- Qualifying Standards: Some federations require minimum Wilks scores to qualify for national or international competitions
- Ranking Systems: Historical comparison and all-time rankings

Raw vs. Equipped Categories
- Classic/Raw: Knee sleeves allowed, no wraps. Most relevant for home gym athletes.
- Equipped: Knee wraps, bench shirts, squat suits, deadlift suits allowed. Dramatically different totals.
- Raw with Wraps: Some federations allow knee wraps in “raw” competition, creating an intermediate category.
Always verify which category a Wilks score belongs to before comparing.

Calculate Wilks 2 manually for a male athlete:

For this athlete, the result is approximately 385 Wilks — solidly in the intermediate classification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wilks only for powerlifters? No — while developed for powerlifting, the Wilks score provides meaningful context for any strength athlete who performs compound barbell lifts. CrossFitters, strongmen, and recreational lifters can all use it for benchmarking.
Can I calculate Wilks for individual lifts? Yes. Multiply any single lift by the Wilks coefficient for your bodyweight. This is useful for identifying which lift is strongest or weakest relative to your size.
Why did my Wilks score drop when I gained weight? If you gained weight disproportionate to your strength gains, your Wilks coefficient decreases more than your total increases. This is common during bulking phases. Focus on whether your total increased — Wilks will follow as you build strength on the new bodyweight.
How does body composition affect Wilks? Wilks uses total bodyweight, not lean mass. Two athletes at 200 lb with different body fat percentages will have the same Wilks coefficient, but the leaner athlete has more muscle generating force. This is a known limitation — Wilks compares total-body performance, not pure muscular efficiency.
What is a good Wilks score for a natural lifter? A Wilks score of 350–400 represents impressive natural strength achievable by most dedicated male lifters. 400–450 is advanced and may take 5–8 years.
