Myofascial release is a therapeutic technique that applies sustained pressure to the myofascial tissues — the connective tissue (fascia) that surrounds and supports muscles throughout the body. The goal is to reduce tension, eliminate pain, and restore normal movement by releasing adhesions or “trigger points” where the fascia has become restricted.

The term combines “myo” (muscle) and “fascial” (relating to fascia). Professional myofascial release is performed by physical therapists, massage therapists, and chiropractors. For home use, self-myofascial release (SMR) achieves similar benefits using foam rollers, massage balls, massage guns, and other tools.
