Periodization and Progression

Critical Programming Principles

The power/hypertrophy distinction is real but not absolute. Power sessions produce some hypertrophy; hypertrophy sessions produce some strength. The separation optimizes emphasis but does not create exclusive adaptation pathways.

Do not transform power sessions into hypertrophy work. The long rest periods and heavy loads are the stimulus. Reducing rest to 60 seconds and adding reps destroys the power adaptation and creates a mediocre hybrid session that produces neither strength nor size optimally.

Hypertrophy sessions require genuine effort. The moderate loads can deceive you into coasting. If you finish hypertrophy sessions feeling like you could do another round, you are not training hard enough. The AMRAP final set on each exercise provides a built-in effort check.

Nutrition must support both goals. A slight surplus (200–300 calories above maintenance) with high protein (0.8–1.0g per lb bodyweight) supports the dual demands of power and hypertrophy training. Aggressive deficits compromise recovery and adaptation.

Track objective recovery markers: Morning heart rate 5+ BPM above baseline, persistent joint soreness, and declining motivation are all signs of insufficient recovery. When these accumulate, insert a rest day or reduce volume by 20% for one week.


Who Should Run PHUL

PHUL is designed for intermediate trainees who:

Integration with Conditioning

PHUL is demanding. Adding extensive conditioning can compromise recovery and strength progress. If conditioning is a priority:

High-intensity interval training is generally incompatible with PHUL due to overlapping fatigue pathways. Choose one priority and commit to it.
