Product Sourcing | SnugGym
How Products Are Selected for Analysis
SnugGym analyzes products through a systematic selection process designed to cover the full market of compact, apartment-friendly fitness equipment while maintaining complete editorial independence.
Selection Pipeline
| Stage | Process | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Market Scan | We monitor Amazon Best Sellers, manufacturer new releases, fitness industry publications, and reader requests to identify relevant products | Longlist of 50-100 products per category per year |
| 2. Relevance Filter | Products must meet minimum criteria: actively sold, at least 20 user reviews, dimensions available, priced under $3,000 (with rare exceptions) | Shortlist of 20-30 products per category |
| 3. Editorial Prioritization | The editorial team selects 10-15 products per category for deep analysis based on diversity of type, price point distribution, and reader interest signals | Final analysis list |
| 4. Score and Rank | Products are evaluated using the 8-criteria scoring rubric | Ranked recommendations |
Selection Criteria
A product is selected for analysis when it meets one or more of these criteria:
- Category leader — Top-selling or top-rated in its category on major retailers
- Innovation signal — Introduces new technology or design relevant to small-space fitness
- Reader demand — Requested by readers via contact form or search analytics
- Comparison value — Provides meaningful comparison point for category leaders
- Price point coverage — Represents an underrepresented budget tier
- Category gap — Fills a product type not yet covered on SnugGym
Purchased vs. Provided by Manufacturers
Our Standard Practice: No Manufacturer Products
SnugGym does not request or accept free products from manufacturers, distributors, or retailers for review purposes. This policy eliminates the psychological obligation and potential bias that can accompany gifted products.
All product evaluations are conducted using:
- Published manufacturer specifications (manuals, websites, data sheets)
- Independent test data (where available)
- Aggregated verified user reviews (50+ for pattern claims)
- Our own comparative analysis frameworks
Rare Exceptions
In extremely rare cases (fewer than 5% of products analyzed), a manufacturer may provide a product sample for photography or dimensional verification. When this occurs:
- We disclose it — The product page clearly states “Product sample provided by [Manufacturer]” in a visible disclosure box
- No scoring advantage — Provided products are scored using the identical 8-criteria rubric
- Independent evaluation — The editorial team maintains sole authority over all scores and recommendations
- Return policy — Products can be returned to the manufacturer at any time at their expense
- No ongoing relationship — Product provision does not create any expectation of favorable coverage or ongoing collaboration
Products We Purchase
The SnugGym team occasionally purchases products through normal retail channels for:
- Photography — When manufacturer-provided imagery is insufficient
- Dimensional verification — When published specifications conflict across sources
- Hands-on familiarization — To better understand product operation (observations are labeled as hands-on and kept distinct from specification-based analysis)
Purchased products are bought through the same retail channels available to any consumer, using standard payment methods. Purchase decisions are made by the editorial team based on content needs.
Disclosure of Supplied Products
Current Disclosures
As of our last policy review (June 2026), no products currently analyzed on SnugGym were provided by manufacturers. All evaluations are based on publicly available specifications and aggregated user data.
Disclosure Format
When a product has been supplied by a manufacturer, the following disclosure appears prominently on the product’s review page:
Product Source Disclosure: This product was provided by [Manufacturer Name] for analysis purposes. SnugGym’s evaluation, scoring, and recommendation are conducted independently using our standard 8-criteria rubric. Product provision does not influence our assessment.
Independence Maintenance
Separation of Sourcing and Editorial
Product sourcing decisions and editorial evaluation are functionally separated:
- Selection determines which products are analyzed (based on market relevance, reader interest)
- Evaluation determines how products are scored (based on 8-criteria rubric)
- Badging determines recommendation level (based on score thresholds)
No single individual controls both selection and evaluation for any product.
Manufacturer Communication Boundaries
Manufacturers may contact SnugGym regarding their products. We accept:
- Factual correction requests (verified against independent sources)
- Product update notifications (new models, specification changes, discontinuations)
- General inquiries about our analysis process
We do not accept:
- Requests to change scores or badges
- Requests to remove or modify negative content
- Offers of payment, gifts, or favors in exchange for coverage
- Demands for pre-publication review or approval
Affiliate Independence
Product selection and scoring are entirely independent of affiliate commission considerations:
- Products are selected before affiliate link generation
- Scores are assigned before affiliate links are created
- Products without affiliate programs receive identical analytical rigor
- Category commission rate differences do not influence product selection
