How We Score Products | SnugGym

Overview

Every product analyzed on SnugGym receives a score from 1.0 to 10.0 based on eight weighted criteria. This page explains the scoring system in detail — how each criterion is measured, how weights are assigned, and how final scores translate into recommendation badges.

Normalization Method

Raw Score to Normalized Score

Each criterion receives a raw score from 1 to 10 based on the rubric above. These raw scores are then normalized to ensure fair comparison across product categories.

Normalization process:

  1. Category baseline: The median product in each category receives a normalized score of 5.5
  2. Standard deviation: One standard deviation above the median = 7.0; below = 4.0
  3. Floor and ceiling: Scores are bounded to 1.0 (minimum) and 10.0 (maximum)
  4. Temporal adjustment: Scores are re-normalized quarterly as new products enter the market

Why Normalize?

Without normalization, older products that were competitive in their release year would appear inferior to newer products simply due to market evolution. Normalization maintains fair comparison over time.

Score Drift

As the market improves, a product that scored 8.0 two years ago might drift to 7.5 today — not because the product changed, but because better alternatives exist. We update scores during scheduled reviews to reflect this drift.


Score Translation to Badges

The final weighted score determines the recommendation badge displayed on SnugGym:

Products scoring below 5.5 are typically excluded from our recommendation roundups unless they serve a specific niche use case worth documenting.


Score Limitations

Our scoring system has limitations we acknowledge transparently:

No hands-on measurement. We do not take our own decibel readings or dimensional measurements. We rely on manufacturer specifications and independent test data where available.

Sample bias in user reviews. Online reviews skew toward positive (satisfied buyers) and negative (frustrated owners), with moderate satisfaction underrepresented.

Individual variation. Concrete floors transmit less vibration than wood joists. Tolerant neighbors differ from noise-sensitive ones. A 6’4” user has different needs than a 5’2” user. Our scores are starting points, not final answers.

Price volatility. Scores reflect typical price ranges, not real-time pricing. A product may shift value tiers during major sales events.

Our scoring rubric is reviewed annually. Changes to criteria, weights, or normalization methods are documented here with revision dates.
