Research Methodology
SnugGym evaluates fitness equipment through Research-Backed Editorial Analysis. This means our assessments are based on published specifications, manufacturer documentation, and aggregated user feedback — not hands-on testing we have not conducted.
Our methodology follows a structured evidence pipeline:
-
Specification Collection: We gather published specifications from manufacturer websites, product manuals, and retailer data sheets. Every specification is verified against at least two independent sources.
-
Evidence Registration: All sources are logged in an internal Evidence Register with source tier, date accessed, claims supported, and confidence level.
-
Comparative Analysis: Products are compared on standardized criteria using specification data. We calculate derived metrics (cost-per-pound, decibel estimates, space ratios) from raw data.
-
User Feedback Integration: We analyze patterns in aggregated user reviews (minimum 50 reviews for pattern claims). Individual reviews are never cited as evidence — only recurring themes across verified purchasers.
-
Editorial Review: Human editors verify all claims, check calculations, confirm source mappings, and approve content for publication.
Source Hierarchy
All evidence used in SnugGym content is classified into four tiers:
| Tier | Source Type | Examples | Citation Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Manufacturer specs, official documentation | Product manuals, manufacturer websites, ASTM/ISO standards | Highest |
| Tier 2 | Independent analysis, certified labs | Consumer Reports, peer-reviewed studies, certified acoustic testing | High |
| Tier 3 | Aggregated user feedback | Amazon verified reviews (50+ for patterns), retailer Q&A, established forums | Medium |
| Tier 4 | General blogs, unverified sources | Personal blogs, Reddit individual comments, social media | Low / Context only |
Rules:
- Tier 1 sources are always preferred for specifications
- Tier 2 sources override Tier 1 when conflict exists on performance claims
- Tier 3 data must be aggregated and presented as user-reported, not fact
- Tier 4 sources are never used to support factual claims
Evidence Mode: Research-Backed
SnugGym operates in Research-Backed Editorial Analysis mode. We are transparent about what we have and have not done:
We do:
- Analyze published specifications across multiple sources
- Compare products using standardized criteria and scoring rubrics
- Aggregate and analyze patterns in verified user reviews
- Calculate derived metrics (cost-per-feature, noise estimates, space ratios)
- Apply consistent evaluation frameworks across all products
We do not:
- Claim to have hands-on tested products we have not physically evaluated
- Publish measurements we did not take
- Claim ownership or extended use of products
- Fabricate testing conditions or results
- Use stock photos to imply hands-on photography
AI-Assisted Disclosure
SnugGym uses AI-assisted research and drafting tools as part of our editorial workflow. All content is reviewed, verified, and edited by human editors before publication. Factual claims are sourced and verified against manufacturer documentation and independent evidence.
AI tool role: Research assistant for specification extraction, comparison table generation, and initial drafting.
Human editor role: Source verification, fact-checking, tone compliance, analytical judgment, and publication approval.
Quality control: AI-generated content is checked for hallucinated specifications, fabricated citations, tone violations, numerical accuracy, and comparison accuracy before publication.
Independence Statement
Affiliate relationships do not influence editorial content:
- Products are selected for analysis based on user relevance, search demand, and category importance
- No “sponsored” product placements — all analyzed products earn their place through merit
- Negative findings are reported honestly; no product gets a pass because it has high affiliate potential
- Revenue is a byproduct of useful content, not its purpose

Prohibited Content Patterns
The following are never permitted in SnugGym content:
- Exaggerated superlatives: “revolutionary,” “game-changing,” “incredible,” “must-have”
- Filler introductions: “In today’s fast-paced world…” / “With the rise of home fitness…”
- False urgency: “Don’t miss out,” “Limited time,” “Act now”
- Anthropomorphism: “This treadmill wants to…”
- Unsubstantiated absolutes: “the best,” “the quietest” without qualification
- Fake testing claims: “we researched,” “our research-backed review,” “after using this for…”
Content Quality Dimensions
Every page is scored on a 5-point scale across these dimensions:
| Dimension | 5 (Excellent) | 1 (Unacceptable) |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence quality | All claims sourced, Tier 1-2 preferred | Unsourced claims |
| Information gain | Contains unique analysis not found on competitors | Pure summary of other sources |
| User task clarity | Single clear task, fully answered | No clear task, or task not answered |
| Tone compliance | Zero violations, calm evidence-led voice | Multiple prohibited patterns |
| Technical accuracy | All specs verified, all calculations correct | Factual errors |
| Disclosure compliance | FTC + methodology disclosures present | Missing disclosures |
Minimum passing score: 4.0 average across all dimensions.
